The Level-Up Learning Symposium
Saturday, May 19th, 2018, a group of educators from across North Carolina gathered at Meadowview Magnet Middle School to grow and learn together in the area of games and learning. The day was broken into two sections. The morning kicked off with an opening keynote from Dr. Chris Haskell (see below) and was followed by breakout showcases to see great examples of high-engagement learning strategies including robotics, maker education, VR, and more. We concluded the morning with a Game Jam in which we learned to see learning through the lens of game design.
Following lunch, we reconvened to explore board games, card games, and video games while we continued the powerful conversations that were taking place.

Featuring Dr. Chris Haskell Dr. Chris Haskell plays video games for a living, or at least that’s what his friends think. As a professor and researcher Boise State University, Chris focuses on the impact of video games, virtual worlds, social media, and digital culture. Dr. H teaches his classes in Minecraft and World of Warcraft. He created a course about Facebook, Youtube, and Memes. He even has retro 80s arcade games in his office,... for research of course. When it comes to work, Dr. Haskell is serious about play. It’s no wonder his friends think he needs a real job. He also serves as Director of Varsity eSports at Boise State University.
